The city of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka is an important business center and the heart of India's booming IT industry. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Bangalore hotel choices range from high-tech luxury hotels to boutique garden residences on the outskirts of the city.
About Bangalore
Bangalore - or Bengaluru as it is now known - is India's third largest city and a major commerce hub. Several large enterprises have their headquarters here, as well as a number of colleges and respected research institutions.
But technology and commerce isn't all there is to this fast-expanding metropolis - it's also arguably the best place in India to eat, drink and shop. Bangalore also bears the informal title of India's "Garden City" and it's easy to see why - for an urban center of this size, visitors will find an impressive number of parks, gardens and green spaces.
Things to See and Do
Bangalore Palace
The Bangalore Palace is a slice of English history, right in the center of the city. Built by the Maharaja of Mysore in 1887, the palace is modeled on Windsor Castle in London - complete with gothic windows, turrets and towers. Situated in elegant gardens, the vast palace is a popular tourist attraction and also hosts several exhibitions and conferences each year.
Lal Bagh Botanical Garden
One of the many parks and green spaces to be found in Bangalore, the Lal Bagh Botanical Garden is open to visitors all year round. Reasons to visit the gardens include the stunning Lalbagh glasshouse, which looks particularly attractive when illuminated at night. The gardens are home to over 1,000 species of flowers and trees and entrance is permitted free of charge for joggers and cyclists between 6am and 9am and from 6pm to 7pm at night.
Bannerghatta Bio Park
Lying just 13 miles south of Bengaluru, the Bannerghatta Bio Park is a major tourist attraction in Karnataka. Set within 25,000 acres of indigenous forest, the park offers visitors the chance to see tigers, lions, wild boar and other mammals on safari tours. There is also a butterfly house and small zoo at the park, which houses crocodiles, elephants and an aviary of birds.
Shopping
If you love to shop, choose a Bangalore hotel within easy distance of one of the city's many shopping malls. Forum Mall in the upmarket suburb of Koramangla is the biggest mall in the city, boasting a wide choice of designer brands, jewelry and clothing stores. Many of the malls in Bengaluru have multi-screen movie theaters and food courts and are extremely popular at weekends. Alternatively for a more traditional Indian shopping experience, head to a market or bazaar to shop for saris, spices and silks.
Nightlife and Eating Out
While Bangalore once had a reputation as the party capital of India, recent changes in legislation have curbed the city's wilder side. Bars and nightclubs now have to close at 11.30pm, even Bangalore hotel bars. But even if the city is no longer India's nightlife capital, its restaurants still enjoy an excellent reputation. Indeed, the quality and range of food available here is second-to-none. As well as high end restaurants, travelers will find a good number of budget and low cost options in the city, serving everything from traditional Indian cuisine to Chinese fast food.
Festivals and Events
The ten day Karnataka festival of Mysore Dasara is celebrated in September or October and is very popular with both locals and international visitors. During the festival, the city hosts a full program of entertainment, most of which is music and dance. Other festivals celebrated in Bangalore include Deepvali, Ganest Chaturthi and Eid.
Where to Stay
Bangalore offers a wide range of hotels to suit every budget and taste. Modern spa hotels are becoming very popular in the city and offer the latest treatments and state-of-the-art facilities to help guests unwind. Other recreational facilities on offer in Bengaluru hotels include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, fitness centers and health clubs.
Bangalore enjoys a moderate climate without extreme temperatures, however the summer months of April and May can become uncomfortably hot. For this reason, the vast majority of hotels here offer air conditioning as standard, as well as heating during colder months.
Being a technologically advanced city, guests can look forward to excellent IT facilities during their stay. Most hotels offer free wireless internet in public areas, as well as technology helpdesks and meeting rooms.
